Caring for your engagement ring 101

Have you not been able to stop staring at your ring since he put it on your finger? Do you sometimes stare at it at red lights in the sun (it's okay I won't tell). It is such a special piece that has both sentimental and monetary value. You want your ring to last a lifetime so it needs to be cared for properly.

First, insure the ring: Add a jewelry rider to your homeowner's or renter's insurance. If you want you can take out a separate policy with a specialty insurer like Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company.  Make sure you read the fine print to make sure the policy is what you want. You will need to provide a description of the ring- as appraised by a certified independent jeweler. Submitting a close-up photo of your ring is also a good idea. Extras: laser inscription and home security systems, may help you receive discounts!!
Keep your sparkler sparkling by cleaning your ring often. You can purchase a high quality jewelry cleaner that is meant for diamonds. Another option is soaking your ring in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soup and scrubbing with a toothbrush. It is important to clean off all the lotions, soaps, dirt, and skin oils that can cloud your beauty.

Ring maintenance should also include twice-yearly visits to your jeweler, who can check the integrity of the prongs on your setting. You don't want to have the chance of loosing a stone.

Lastly, you want to make sure that you take your ring off when doing activities that are rough on your hands. When doing dishes, cleaning, or swimming it is a good idea to remove your ring and put it in a safe location.
